What is 'Are You Local?'
Attention musicians and music fans: The seventh annual best-new-band search is back. Help the Star Tribune discover the best Minnesota band of 2016. We'll send the winner to the First Avenue stage as well as Austin, Texas, during South by Southwest!
How does it work?
Are you a new band, or maybe a great yet-to-be discovered local band? Nominate yourself! If you know of a good new band, encourage them to enter. Sixteen acts will be chosen for a public vote Feb. 1-4. Then up to five finalists will perform at the Star Tribune's "Are You Local?" showcase on Feb. 20 at 7th Street Entry. The winning band will then play the Star Tribune's South by Southwest Send-Off Concert on March 11 at First Avenue.
Can I listen to the bands?
Yeah, that's kind of the point. There will be a lot of nominees, so click the "Hear Nominees" tab all month to explore some great new local music and prepare for the public vote in February. Who knows, you might discover your new favorite band.
Can we still participate if the contest has already started?
Yes. Nominations will be accepted through Jan. 28.
Are there prizes?
Yes. Each finalist will be profiled in Star Tribune and perform at the "Are You Local?" showcase on Feb, 20. The winning band will take home even more goodies, including a spot in the Star Tribune SXSW Send-Off on March 11 at First Avenue, and they'll join the Star Tribune/First Avenue music showcase in Austin, Texas, on March 18. We'll include a travel stipend to help the winning band get down to Texas. Yee haw!
