What is 'Are You Local?'
Attention musicians and music fans: The eighth annual best-new-band search is back. Help the Star Tribune discover the best new Minnesota band of 2017. We'll set the winning band up with $2,000 in cash and other prizes, plus a slot in our "Are You Local?" showcase on Feb. 17 at First Avenue.
How does it work?
Are you a new band, or maybe a great yet-to-be discovered local band? Nominate yourself! If you know of a good new band, encourage them to enter. Sixteen acts will be chosen for a public vote that takes place Jan. 18-26. Then up to five finalists will compete in a Turf Club show Feb. 6. The winning band will then play the Star Tribune's annual 'Are You Local?' showcase on Feb.17 at First Avenue.
Can I listen to the bands?
Yeah, that's kind of the point. There will be a lot of nominees, so click the "Hear Nominees" tab all month to explore some great new local music and prepare for the public vote. Who knows, you might discover your new favorite band.
Can we still participate if the contest has already started?
Yes. Nominations will be accepted through Jan. 16. Voting ends Jan. 26.
Are there prizes?
Yes. Each finalist will be profiled in Star Tribune and perform at the Turf Club on Feb. 6. The winning band will take home even more goodies, including $2,000 in cash and other prizes, and a spot in the "Are You Local?" showcase on Feb. 17 at First Avenue.
